Answers for sheet # 254

1) 1:8 ratio means that there are 9 parts altogether ( 1 + 8 = 9). Out of 9 parts, 1 part is for left handers, and 8 parts for right handers. Divide 180 students in 9 parts. 180 divided by 9 = 20

1 part = 20 students.

Left hander: 1 part = 20 students are left handers
Right hander: 8 parts = 8 parts x 20 students/part = 160 students

2) 2:1 means that Kens 2 parts while John gets 1 part. There are three parts ( 2 +1 = 3). Divide 30 in 3 parts

1 part = $10

Ken has two parts = 2 x $10 = $20
John has one part = 1 x $10 = $10

3)
The ratio of men to women is 6:1.

7 parts in all ( 6 + 1). Divide 28 people by 7.
1 part = 4 people

Men has 6 parts = 6 x 4 = 24
Women has 1 part = 6 x 1 = 6

4) Divide the profits in the ratio of 3:2.

5 parts in al
l.

$24000/5 = $4800

1 part = $4800

Smith gets 3 parts = 3 x $4800 = $14,400
Kelly gets 2 parts = 2 x $4800 = $9600

5) Mary = $90
Kay = $180
