1) Judy bought an assortment of cheeses at the market. She bought 2.3 pounds of cheddar, 1.7 pounds of Swiss, and 3/4 of a pound of provolone cheese. The plastic bag she carried was guaranteed to hold four pounds. Should she use that bag to carry the cheese? Defend your answer mathematically.






2) Out of 50 free throw shots attempted with a basketball, the school principal made 7 baskets. Ms. Jones, the sixth grade teacher, made 6 baskets out of 40 free throw shots attempted. Write a ratio for each person comparing the number of baskets made to their total number of free throw shots attempted. Who had the higher ratio of baskets made, the principal or Ms. Jones? Explain your answer.






3) Ken has $15 to spend on groceries. The items he plans to buy cost: $2.76, $0.95, $3.25, $0.55, $1.99, and $2.45. Estimate the cost of each item to the nearest dollar to determine if Ken has enough money to buy all items.





4) Carol's teacher used a different grading system for evaluating quizzes. On a history quiz, she got 9/12 questions correct. On an English quiz she scored 0.85, and on a math quiz she scored 0.76. She got 50 out of 75 possible points on a science quiz. On which test did Carol score the highest?




5) Wayne wants to put a new floor in his kitchen. His floor measures 10.75 meters by 3.43 meters. Estimate the area of the floor by rounding the length and width to the nearest tenth.
