Explain and Show Your Work.
1) Frank and Jerry want to go to a movie. They agreed that Frank would earn 2/5 of the money and Jerry would earn 3/10 of the money. What fraction of the money do they still need to earn?
2) Suzie and Patsy went to Safeway and bought 27 lollipops for $1.08 and 37 gumballs for $2.96. Gary and Kyle went to Longs Drug and bought 42 lollipops for $1.26 and 39 gumballs for $3.51. Which store had the better value for each item?
3) Todd and Larry went to the harbor and saw a military ship. The mast cast a shadow 150 feet long. While they were looking at the ship, they noticed a 6 feet 6 inches man standing on deck next to the mast who cast a shadow 5 feet 4 inches long. Todd and Larry want to know how tall the mast of the military ship was.
4) If a 12 feet light post has a 26 feet shadow, then how long is the shadow of a 16 feet tree?
5) In 1910, Dr. Evil's land speed record was 131.72 miles per hour. In 1970, it was 622.29 miles per hour. About how many times faster was the speed in 1970?
Answers for sheet # 215
1) 2/5 = 4/10
4/10 + 3/10 = 7/10
10/10 7/10 = 3/10 of the money still left to earn.
You could also solve this problem by turning each fraction into a decimal.
2) Safeway: $1.08/27 = $.04 for lollipops; $2.96/37 = $.08 for gumballs
Albertson's: $1.26/42 = $.03 for lollipops; $3.51/39 = $.09 for gumballs
Albertson's as the better value on lollipops and Safeway has the better value on gumballs.
3) 6 fee 6 inches = 78 inches
5 feet 4 inches = 64 inches
150 feet = 1800 inches
Solve using proportions
man/shadow = mast/mast shadow
78/64 = x/1800
use cross products: 78 x 1800 = 64x;
140400 = 64x
x = 2193.75 inches, or 182 13/16 inches tall
4) 12/26 = 16/N
26 x 16 = 416
416 ¸ 12 = 34.66 or 34 2/3 feet tall
The shadow is 34.66 or 34 2/3 feet tall
5) 622.29/131.72 = 4.0722 = About 4 times faster
