Sheet # 222

Name: ________________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) Travis went to the market on "Everything On Sale Day" to get some food. He needed 5 pounds of potatoes, 4 pounds of chicken, 2 cans of turkey gravy and 2 bags of peas. "Everything On Sale Day" means that everything is 20% off. Potatoes cost $.80 per pound, chicken is $3 per pound, turkey gravy is $0.80 per can and peas are $2 per bag. How much change will Travis get if he pays with a $50 bill?

2) Will collects toy planes and currently has 900. 20% are painted green and red; 45% are painted yellow and green; 5% are black and purple; 10% are gold and orange, and 10% are blue and silver. How many planes are green and red?

3) Ms. B's 6th grade class of 20 kids voted on their favorite Brittany Spears song. 25% of the kids voted for Soda Pop, 65% of the kids voted for The Beat Goes On, and 10% of the kids voted for Sometimes. How many kids voted for each song?

4) The Bulldog Kennel Snack Shop at Orinda Intermediate School sells bagels at Brunch. In the first week of January, 230 6th graders purchased $124.64 in bagels. The 7th graders bought two times that amount. The 8th graders purchased ¼ of what the 6th grade bought. What was the total amount of money spent on bagels that week?

Answers for sheet # 222

1) 5 lbs of potatoes x $.80 = $4.00; $4.00 x .20 = $.80; $4.00 - $.80 = $3.20 for potatoes

4 lbs of chicken x $3 = $12.00; $12.00 x .20 = $2.40; $12 - $2.40 = $9.60

2 cans of turkey gravy x $.80 = $1.60 x .20 = $.32; $1.60 - $.32 = $1.28

2 bags of peas x $2.00 = $4.00 x .20 = $.80; $4.00 - $.80 = $3.20

$50 – ($3.20 + $9.60 + $1.28 + $3.20) = $32.72 in change for Travis

2) 20% of 900 = .2 x 900 = 180.0 = 180 planes are green and red.3

3) 20 x .20 = 5 kids who voted for Soda Pop; 20 x .65 = 13 kids who voted for The Beat Goes On; 20 x .10 = 2 kids who voted for Sometimes.

4) $124.64 x 2 = $249.28 spent by 7th graders
$124.64 ¸ 4 = $31.16 spent by 8th graders
$124.64 spent by 6th graders;

$124.64 + $249.28 + $31.16 = $405.20 spent on bagels that week
