Explain and Show Your Work.
Golf is one sport in which the lowest score wins. In fact, a really good golfer's score card may include some negative numbers.
A golf course has either 9 holes or 18 holes. When a golf course is designed, experts decide the number of strokes it should take to complete each hole. That number of strokes is called par. For example, if it takes 4 strokes to complete a hole, then that hole is referred to as a "par 4" hole. Easier holes may be par 3, and more difficult holes may be par 5.
For example, if a hole is par 4, but a golfer takes 4 strokes to complete the hole, his/her score will be "0".
If a golfer takes 5 strokes to complete the par 4 hole, his/her score will be "+1" because the golfer takes 1 more stroke than it should take to complete the hole. If the golfer takes 6 strokes to complete the hole, his/her score will be "+2" because the golfer takes 2 more strokes than 4.
If a golfer takes 3 strokes to complete the par 4 hole, his/her score will be "-1" because the golfer takes 1 fewer stroke than it should take to complete the hole. If the golfer takes 2 strokes to complete the hole, his/her score will be "- 2" because the golfer takes 2 fewer strokes than 4.
Which is a better score, +1 or -1?
