Sheet # 7/The Summer Olympics - 100 m Dash

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) Tom Burke of the United States won the 100 m dash at Athens in 1896 in the time of 12.0 seconds. At the Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owns (USA) won in 10.3 seconds. In 1996, Donovan Bailey (Canada) won in 9.94 seconds. Donovan Bailey took about 45 steps (counted on slow motion replay) to cover the 100 m dash.

a) What is the difference between the winning times of Tom and Donovan?

b) What is the difference between the winning times of Jesse and Donovan?

c) Calculate the length of Donovan's stride.

d) How far did Donovan run in 1 second? What was his average hourly speed in km/hr?

2) Gail Deavers of USA won gold medal in 100 m dash. She ran 100 m in 10.94 seconds. In 1928 Olympics, Betty Robinson of USA also won gold medal in 100 m dash. She ran 100 m in 12.2 seconds.

a) What is the difference between the winning times of Gail and Betty?

b) At this rate, how long will Betty take to cover 1 km?

c) Round the winning times to a whole number.

Answers of Sheet #7:

1) a)12.0s-9.94s = 2.06s.

b)10.3s-9.94s = 0.36s
.
c)100m/45stride = 2.2 meters/stride

d)100m/9.94s = 10.06 meters per second
avg hourly speed is (1/10)km /(9.94s/3600s)
=36.2 km/hr.

2) a)12.2s-10.94s = 1.26s

b)12.2*10 = 122.0 seconds to run 1 km at 100 meter
pace, or 2 minutes and 2 seconds

c)Gail: 11 seconds
Betty:12 seconds
